Symmetry in Math, Science and Art

Grade Twos have been working on the concept of Symmetry and we were able to show our learning in a variety of ways.

Symmetry is defined as
The quality of being made up of exactly similar parts facing each other or around an axis.

After reading Eric's Carle's book The Hungry Caterpillar, we were inspired to create butterflies with symmetry.  We folder paper and cut out the shape through both sheets to make a symmetrical butterfly shapes.  Then we used a coat of liquid starch and then an eyedropper to put drops of paint on one side.  By folding the paper back together, the symmetrical design was created.

After the paint dried, we used the concept of symmetry again to cut out a body and create matching antennae for our insects.

They have certainly brightened up our classroom!
