Green Foods

In honour of St. Patrick's Day, the Grade Twos tasted some green foods on Monday, March 18th.

The vegetable Kale is leafy and green and came from Mexico.

The vegetable called Brussel Sprouts had to be cooked in the microwave for 5 minutes and everyone in our end of the school said they could smell them!  They came from California.
The kiwi fruit came from Italy.  Although they were brown and fuzzy on the outside, the inside was green with black seeds and had a whitish core.
Honeydew melon came from China.  There was a hard yellowish rind on the outside and seeds in jelly that had to be scooped out of the middle before it was cut in pieces.

Students were good sports and gave everything a try.  Of the 19 students here today,
-14 liked the kiwi
-13 liked the honeydew
-5 liked the kale and
-12 liked the brussel sprouts.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Outdoor Classroom Adventure #1

Our class got some special outdoor classroom journals and we used them for the first time on March 12th.  Our task was to go outside and study the snow!  We had rulers, magnifying glasses, our journals and pencils.

Everyone packed a small container full of snow. We came back in the school and made a prediction of when the snow would be melted. Students used their Outdoor Classroom Journals to record observations like these:

  • in places, the snow is as deep as the ruler
  • some places the snow is packed down solid like cement
  • some places the snow is loose because no one walks there
  • when you walk, sometimes you sink and sometimes you don't

  • tiny black dots in the snow - maybe it is dust?
  • snow only sparkles in the sun
  • you can't see snow sparkle in the shade
  • there was ice and even grass in some of the snow
  • it was a very sunny day so there were lots of dark shadows

We can hardly wait for adventure number two!

Book Creator for IPads

New and exciting in Grade 2 is an Ipad app called Book Creator.  Students are able to research for facts about different dinosaurs and show what they have learned on the Ipad.  Along with typing in words, students can add photos and labels as well as record their voice.
