Doubles, Doubles!

Doubles, Doubles, I can add doubles!
It's no trouble for me to add doubles!

Have you heard your child singing this song by chance?  (Mrs. Perreault said it was stuck in her head all day after hearing it in Math class this morning!)  Below are the links to the videos on YouTube:

The Math facts that we call The Doubles are the next set we focus on after mastering the Rainbow Numbers.  Knowing the answer in 1 or 2 seconds will help speed up computations but will also help with learning the "Near Doubles" facts like 7 + 6 and 8 + 9.  When practicing with your child, don't forget to turn them around to connect with the subtraction facts like 16 - 8 and 12 - 6.

Egyptian Ghosts!

The Grade Two and Threes continue to practice cursive writing and because we are studying Ancient Egypt, those are the words they used this week.

We have not tried adding a video to the blog yet, so here goes! We hope it works for you to see the Egyptian Ghosts writing on our Smartboard!

Actually, there were no ghosts in our room.  There is a feature on Smart Notebook called Page Recording.  We can use it to record something being written and then play it back.  Using this fun feature helps us remember how cursive letters are connected and also helps practice reading words written in cursive.

I Love To Read Month with Dr. Seuss

Each February, our school chooses a genre or an author to be the focus of our I Love To Read Month activites. This year, Mrs. MacKenzie planned several events to spotlight Dr,. Seuss and we continued the theme in oour classroom.   Every day, there was a Library Lotto question about Dr. Seuss or his books asked over the intercom.  Some of our classmates were able to answer the questions and won a prize! Dr. Seuss's books have been made even more famous in movies like Horton Hears a Who, The Grinch , and The Lorax. Many of the old cartoons are on You Tube as well.

One of his books we read in class was Wocket in My Pocket.  Here is video of someone reading it from YouTube.  It gave us the pattern to create a creature that rhymes with our name. We looked carefully at this and other books to see how he created his artwork and we used markers to colour them brightly. Here are some of our creations.

Next, we did some creative writing about the creature we drew and used our best cursive writing and spelling to make a page for display.  They are posted in our room, come in and have a look!

What is a blog?

Our class is starting a class blog called Room 21.  Some of us want to guess what a blog is...

Is it something exciting?  Is it like Facebook? Do you talk about stuff?  Is it like Twitter?  Is it like Dog with a Blog ( a TV show)?  Do you use pictures?  Do you tell people about your life?  Do you write about a bunch of stuff?  Is it fun?  What is like to be a blog?  Do people write back to you? How does it work?

We will find out the answers to our questions!

We watched this video to help learn about blogs.

We published our first blog post!
